A stunning pen has an opening 13 in the lower part of one side and a laterally movable arm 22 for clamping a beast's neck against a member on that side whereby when the neck is released the beast falls towards or through the opening. The pen comprises a tubular framework and includes front and rear gates 11, 12 and a counter-balanced side door 14 which is hinged to the pen along its upper edge and extends along one side for about half the height of the pen. The floor of the pen is longitudinally stepped. Across the raised portion 19 of the step is secured a partition 20. which tapers towards the side wall opposite the side door. An arm 22 pivoted at the base of the partition may be swung against a tension spring towards the side door of the pen to hold the neck of an animal against the door side of the pen.for slaughter. When inoperative, the arm 22 lies in the angle of an angle-piece 23 along the tapering edge of the partition. The arm is secured in any neck-gripping position by a ratchet mechanism at its free end and is released when the side door is opened, the floor being so stepped that the carcase falls towards the side door opening 13 for removal.
