The direction of flow of fluid in a rotary pump is indicated by the apparent movement towards or away from the shaft 7 of the section of a spiral line 15 carried by the outer flange 14 of the blade wheel 8 seen momentarily through the eccentric window 10 in the casing 3. The spiral line 15 of suitable pitch and thickness may be marked as a black line on a white background in paint resistant to hot water, it may be drawn in fluorescent material or by anodic oxidation. It may be formed as a groove or a rib, and may be carried by any part rotating with the rotor e.g. a disc provided for hydraulic balance.
