Abstract

949,617. Electrically heated tundish nozzles. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. April 8, 1960 [April 8, 1959], No. 31144/63. Divided out of 949,616. Heading H5H. A casting ladle or tundish includes a delivery outlet at least a part of which is heated by the passage of current through an assembly of carbon granules surrounding the outlet. A.C. or D.C. is passed between symmetrically opposed carbon electrodes 11 through carbon granules 13 filling an annular compartment 7c in the base of the metering nozzle unit 7 of a tundish 2. The temperature of the nozzle is varied by varying the pressure exerted upon the granules by the electrodes 11 which, when hot, substantially fill the passages 11a, preventing ingress of air to compartment 7c. Both Joule and arc heating can occur within the granular assembly.
