Abstract

A process for making expanded nylon-11 comprises forming a mixture comprising powdered nylon-11 and a powdered blowing agent and heating the mixture to a temperature at which the blowing agent decomposes. The heating may be effected in a mould, in which case the decomposition temperature of the blowing agent is selected to have a value of 10-50 DEG C. above the melting point of the nylon-11. The process may also take the form of coating a metal object by heating it to a temperature above the decomposition temperature of the blowing agent and dipping it into a mixture of powdered nylon-11 and powdered blowing agent. In examples (1) a mixture of nylon-11 (m.p. 186 DEG C.) and azodicarbonamide is heated at 200 to 210 DEG C. to give a foam suitable for oil-impregnated bushes or bearings; (2) a piece of aluminium heated to 450 DEG C. is dipped into a mixture of nylon-11 and trihydrazinotriazine. A coating of blown nylon forms on the surface.ALSO:A process for coating metal objects with expanded nylon-11 comprises dipping the heated object into a mixture comprising powdered nylon-11 and powdered blowing agent, the metal having been heated to a temperature at which the blowing agent decomposes and in excess of the melting point of nylon-11. In Example (2) a piece of aluminium heated to 450 DEG C. is dipped into a mixture of nylon-11 and trihydrazinotriazine. A coating of blown nylon-11 forms on the surface. The mixture may be formed into a fluidized bed prior to dipping.
