Abstract

949, 522. Measuring force electrically. KISTLER INSTRUMENTE A.G. Nov. 20,1961 [Dec. 10, 1960], No. 41397/61. Heading G1N. The tension in a component part of a constructional assembly is measured by a washer incorporating a piezo-crystal, located e.g. under a nut or bolt, to give a voltage signal indicative of the local stress without affecting the assembly. In an embodiment (Fig. 1), a measuring washer 15, located beneath a fixing nut 14, comprises two discs 16,17 housing two piezo-crystals 21, 22 which produce an e.m.f. between their common face and the assembly body indicative of the tension in the bolt 13. The nut 14 is lubricated to obviate torque in the washer 15. In modifications, (i) the two piezo-crystal rings are located in a slot in a solid washer; (ii) a plurality of pairs of crystal elements are distributed round the washer, enabling the distribution of force round the washer to be ascertained; (iii) the outer edge of the gap containing the crystals is hermetically closed by a spring or sleeve.
