Abstract

Hollow iron or ferrous metal structures, e.g. heat exchanges, boilers, gas generators or storage tanks are pickled and passivated by filling the structure with a pickling solution with complete removal of air therefrom, allowing the solution to remain in the structure, e.g. for 24 to 48 hours, to dissolve oxides and like impurities such as rust, scale or solder flux from the structure walls, removing the solution by directly replacing it with water until the liquid isuing at the outlet is neutral or, at least, has a pH value of 6 without allowing air to contact the inner surfaces of the structure, replacing the rinsing water directly without draining out by a solution which forms soluble complex ions with any Fe(OH)2 floccules suspended in the structure, e.g. containing a tartrate, citrate or malate, and removing these complex ions by further water rinsing without draining replacing the solution until the pH values at the inlet and outlet are the same. A passivating solution, e.g. containing an amine or amide acid bichromate, may then be introduced, again without draining out, and allowed to stand or recycled, e.g. for 1 to 24 hours, prior to finally draining out. Each new solution or rinsing water may be substituted for the preceding one by introducing it at the top whilst draining at the bottom of the structure. The pickling solution may be allowed to stand in the structure or continuously circulated or alternatively allowed to stand and circulated. After treatment, the structure may be exhausted by suction applied at the bottom after sealing all apertures, and dried by introducing a current of dry oxygen at the bottom. Specification 647,782 is referred to.
