Abstract

949,108. Valves. FLIGHT REFUELLING Ltd. Nov. 9, 1962 [Dec. 6, 1961], No. 43709/61. Heading F2V. A sampling valve comprises a body 28, Fig. 1, formed with a plurality of inlet passages 23 terminating at a surface of the body, a rotor 35 co-operating with the surface and rotatable step-bystep to bring a passage 58 therein connected to an outlet passage 45 successively into register with each of the inlet passages, means operable intermittently to move the rotor axially away from the body surface, and means 71, 72, Fig. 4, operated by the axial displacement of the rotor to rotate it through an angle such that the rotor passage is moved from one inlet passage to the next. In the preferred embodiment, the inlet passages are connected to the fuel channels a<SP>1</SP>. Fig. 11, of a nuclear reactor while the outlets a<SP>2</SP> and a<SP>3</SP> are connected through further sampling valves B to precipitators or other test apparatus, the outlets a<SP>2</SP> receiving gas simultaneously from all the fuel channels except when any one of them is connected to the outlet a<SP>3</SP>. The valve B connected to the outlets a<SP>2</SP> is operated continuously to take group samples from the valves A in turn while the valve B connected to the outlets a<SP>3</SP> remains in each position long enough for each valve A to supply a gas sample from each fuel channel. Each valve B also includes a rotor 87, Fig. 8, with a passage 106 to connect each of a series of inlets 93 connected to the outlets a<SP>2</SP> and a<SP>3</SP> with a passage 94 leading to the precipitator. A valve 96, conveniently solenoid operated, admits pulses of gas pressure to a passage 112 to lift a stem 102 connected to the rotor on which sets of teeth 71, Fig. 4, are engaged by a ball 72 to cause rotation. Gas pulses are also passed through the valves B to the valves A from a solenoid valve 113, to lift each rotor through a non-return valve 64, Fig. 1, in its outlet passage 46. A valve 114 operates alternately with valve 113 to form an intermittent connection with the precipitator. Each valve A includes filters 41 in the inlets and fine-bore gas passages 66 and 67 in a bush 55 and a stud 65 to blow away foreign matter from the surface of the block 28. A pin 75 in a housing 16 aligned with an access opening in the reactor angularly locates each valve during assembly by co-operating with cam edges 79 on a cylinder 26 enclosing the rotor.
