Abstract
949,039. Welding by fusion. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 15, 1960 [Dec. 31, 1959], No. 44404/59. Heading B3R. In a welded connection between two coaxial metal cylinders disposed one within the other and having different compositions such that if welded directly to one another the weld would deteriorate through migration of a component of one of the metals, each cylinder is welded directly to a surface, to which the cylinder can be welded without such deterioration, of a preformed hollow cylindrical transition member disposed between the cylinders having a pair of surfaces to which the metals can be welded without such deterioration. A butterfly valve in the gas duct of a gas-cooled nuclear reactor comprises a cylindrical mild steel body 1 and a flexible stainless steel sealing member 2 urged by gas pressure applied via a part 3 into sealing contact with the edge of the valve closure member (not shown). The edges of the stainless steel member 2 are welded at 7 and 8 to a stainless steel layer 6 bonded to a mild steel layer 5 in a preformed cylinder 4 and the mild steel layer 5 is welded at 9 and 10 to the mild steel body 1. Grooves 11, 12 are provided in the fillet to allow differential expansion.
