Abstract

In a spring-mounted jewel assembly, a jewel 14 has a convexly-bevelled edge 19, is urged towards a frusto-conical shaped annular abutment 13 of a tube 11 by a spring 18, and is mounted in a carrier 16 which has a tapered outer surface extending to an annular, conversely-bevelled fulcrum 17 to facilitate tilting about the inner surface of the tube 11. The spring 18, which abuts a plug 12 having been press-fitted into the tube 11, may abut the carrier 16 having a pin 21, Fig. 2, thereon and a recess therein for the jewel 14. The carrier 16 may have two recesses as shown in Fig. 3, one recess receiving the spring and the other recess receiving the jewel. The annular abutment 13 extends to a central aperture 20 through which passes a pivot 15 to engage the jewel 14. The clearance between the aperture 20 and the pivot 15 is predetermined so as to ensure that a radial force applied to the pivot 15 cannot cause the edge 19 of the jewel to engage the bore of the tube 11.
