Abstract
A method of sintering particulate material such as fly ash or clay for cement comprises charging the material into a vertical shaft kiln of the type having a refractory body 12 penetrating into and through the firebed 4 which is formed at the upper level of material in the furnace (see Division F4). The refractory body 12 may serve for the supply of auxiliary combustion air or for the removal of exhaust gases and in addition creates a vertical tunnel or shaft 14 substantially free of material in the downwardly moving mass 3 of sintered material. This tunnel promotes even distribution of the combustion air to the firebed. Sintered material is discharged at the base of the furnace. Two or more refractory bodies may be used creating a corresponding number of vertical tunnels for the upflow and distribution of combustion air. <PICT:0948804/C1/1>
