An injection moulding machine has an injection cylinder 11, and a screw 8 together with its rotary drive 7, mounted independently of one another on a pair of common struts 15, 16 (Fig. 1, not shown) so as to be axially displaceable, the screw and cylinder being interconnected by coupling means adapted to brake the relative movement of the screw and cylinder. The cylinder 11 is supported on the struts 15, 16, by a bridge 9 and the screw 8 with its rotary drive 7 is supported by a bridge 4. The coupling means is situated between the two bridges and may consist of a rod 22 connected to bridge 4 sliding within a sleeve 23 connected to bridge 9, there being plastic washers 24 between the rod and the sleeve which press against the rod more strongly as a screw 25 is tightened. In another embodiment (Fig. 8) the coupling means consists of a piston 19 connected to bridge 4 sliding in a cylinder 29 connected to bridge 9. The piston has a one way valve 20, 31 and the spaces in front of and behind the piston are connected by a channel through which the flow of fluid is controlled by a valve 21. Other embodiments use tension springs 15<SP>11</SP>, 16<SP>11</SP> (Fig. 1, not shown) and electromagnetic means (Figs. 9, 10, not shown). In all of the embodiments the amount of coupling is adjustable.
