Abstract
The surface of an article of a polymer of an olefin of at least 3 carbon atoms, is subjected to the action of a chlorine-liberating compound for a time sufficient to cause chlorination and the absorption of uncombined chlorine at the surface. The treatment may be effected in water \sB an organic solvent and is preferably on an abraded surface of the polyolefin. The chlorine liberating compounds specified are dichlorodimethyl hydantoin, di- and tri-chloro-derivatives of isocyanuric acid and alkali and alkaline earth metal hypochlorites, and the polyolefin may be isotactic polypropylene or polybutylene. The treated polyolefins may easily be dyed, or laminates may be obtained by applying the treated article, e.g. sheet, to an elastomer which on heating becomes vulcanized and bonded to the polyolefin. Applications are conveyer belting, tyres, hose and flexible containers.
