Abstract

At least one surface of a polyolefine, e.g. propylene polymer or copolymer article is subjected to the action of chlorine and/or bromine in the presence of visible light, the amount of halogen combining with the polymer being no more than 1%. The article may be oriented polypropylene film and may be subjected at room temperature and atmospheric pressure for 1-30 sec. to the action of gaseous or aqueous chlorine or sodium hypochlorite. A package may be prepared by heat-sealing the treated film.ALSO:A polyolefin article e.g. film, sheet, tube or bottle, which has been surface treated with chlorine and/or bromine in the presence of visible light, the amount of halogen combining with the polymer being no more than 1%, is coated with inks, nitro-cellulose, adhesive, polyamides, polyvinyl acetals, polyethylene terephthalate, vinyl acetate/vinyl chloride copolymers, vinylidene chloride copolymers or chlorinated rubbers.
