Abstract
Plastics tubing, e.g. of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or copolymers of vinylidene chloride, is coated with a metal, e.g. Al, Cu, Ni, Zn, Ag, Au or Cr, by passing the tubing continuously through a vacuum metallizing chamber whilst maintaining within the tubing a pressure below atmospheric pressure to prevent expansion of the tubing in the metallizing chamber. The tubing may be passed through one or more vacuum chambers from which metal vapour is excluded immediately before it enters and after it leaves the metallizing chamber. The metallizing chamber may contain more than one source of metal. A coating of plastics material may be applied upon the metal coating e.g. by an extrusion die.ALSO:Plastics tubing, e.g. of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or copolymers of vinylidene chloride, is coated with a metal, e.g. Al, Cu, Ni, Zn, Ag, Au or Cr, by passing the tubing continuously through a vacuum metallising chamber whilst maintaining within the tubing a pressure below atmospheric pressure to prevent expansion of the tubing in the metallising chamber and then with a coating of plastics material, e.g. by an extrusion die. The tubing may be passed through one or more vacuum chambers from which metal vapour is excluded immediately before it enters and after it leaves the metallising chamber. The metallising chamber may contain more than one source of metal.
