Abstract

A heat-sealable film comprises an oriented base film which may have been irradiated, of polyethylene having an average density above 0,925, polypropylene, or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, having at least one surface oxidatively modified to improve adhesion of a coating and having one such modified surface coated with either (1) a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, or (2) a partial polyvinyl butyral, comprising at least 80% vinyl butyral, at least 17% vinyl alcohol and at least 0,3% vinyl acetate, all proportions being by weight. The base film may be axially oriented. The coating may be of (1) a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride in the approximate weight ratio 40 : 60, or (2) a partial polyvinyl butyral comprising 80,7% vinyl butyral, 19,0% vinyl alcohol and 0,3% vinyl acetate, the proportions being by weight. The vinylidene chloride-vinyl chloride copolymer may be applied from an acetone solution. The partial polyvinyl butyral may be applied from solution in a mixture of ethyl alcohol and acetone. The coated films may be heat-sealed together to form a laminate. The surface of the base film may be oxidatively modified by flame, solution or glow discharge treatment.
