Abstract
High molecular weight polyolefins are halogenated by forming an aqueous suspension of the polyolefin in a finely divided particulate form, incorporating in the aqueous suspension between 0.005 and 1.0%, based on the polyolefin, of a hydroperoxide catalyst of general formula XYZCOOH, where X, Y and Z are either hydrogen or an alkyl radical of one to eight carbon atoms, only one of X, Y and Z being hydrogen, and subjecting the suspension to the action of a halogenating agent. Specified polyolefins are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, olefin copolymers, polystyrene and polyvinyl toluene, specified hydroperoxides are tertiary - butylhydroperoxide (preferred), secondary - butylhydroperoxide, triethylmethyl hydroperoxide, 1 - methyl - cyclohexyl-1-hydroperoxide and pentamethylethylhydroperoxide while specified halogenating agents are chlorine, bromine and their mixtures. Low- or high-pressure type polyolefins may be used, and the preferred reaction temperature is between 80 DEG and 95 DEG C. Specifications 471,590, 481,515, 530,617, 533,362 and U.S.A. Specification 2,503,252 are referred to.
