[Also in Division Dl] A vertically-reciprocable water-agitator in a clothes washing machine contains a free piston 108 which by inertia tends to remain stationary during reciprocation of the agitator, and thereby pumps liquid entering the interior of the agitator through lower passages 55, 58 out of the top of the agitator. The agitator has an inlet valve 100 and a second valve 112 is carried in the piston 108.
