Abstract

947,415. Winding strand material. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. May 14, 1962 [May 25, 1961], No. 18406/62. Heading D1J. A winding apparatus for strand material 30, Fig. 2, comprises a traversing mechanism 35 guiding the strand on to a rotating take-up tube 28, the traversing mechanism 35 and the tube 28 being coupled to means whereby they are reciprocated simultaneously in mutually opposite directions as indicated by the arrows. The strands 30 may be glass filaments 26 that are sized by an applicator 34 and then passed through a guide 32 that is so positioned as to maintain the strands 30 in a sinusoidal groove 38 formed in the reciprocating and rotating traversing mechanism 35. The applicator 34 and guide 32 may be reciprocated with the traversing mechanism 35. The applicator 34 may be replaced by a saturated felt pad in the guide 32. Reciprocating motion. According to one embodiment Fig. 3, a stationary support 85 carries a pivot 107 on which is mounted a bell crank lever 106. A reciprocating carriage 50 carries the tube 28, a motor to rotate the tube, and an inclined bar 100 acting as a cam that engages the end 104 of the bell crank lever 106 to rock it as the carriage 50 reciprocates. The arm 110 of the bell crank lever 106 is coupled to and reciprocates a plate 87 carrying the traversing mechanism 35 and a motor (not shown) for rotating the traversing mechanism. A tension spring 125 maintained the roller 104 of the bell crank lever 106 in engagement with the cam 100. As the carriage 50, and thus the tube 28, move to the right the plate 87 and thus the traversing mechanism 35 move to the left and vice versa. The inclination of the bar 100 is adjustable to vary the throw of the plate 87. The bar 100 may be replaced by bars of different shape. In Fig. 6 the bar has a horizontal portion 101a so that the plate 87 is not reciprocated whilst the roller 104 is running on the surface 101a, the surface 101a being used whilst the tube 28 is being moved from a start-up position for winding waste to its normal reciprocating positions. In Fig. 7 the bar 102 has its ends shaped to increase the axial speed of the traversing mechanism 35 whilst it is depositing strand at the ends of the forming package to prevent the building of ridges at the end of the forming package. Shaped packages. Fig. 9 (not shown) illustrates a modification in which the reciprocation of the winding tube again causes an inclined cam bar to act on the roller 104 carried by the bell crank lever 106. The reciprocating motion of the winding tube also causes a roller to strike a cam surface in a manner actuating a ratchet mechanism in a step-by-step manner, the ratchet mechanism being mechanically coupled to the inclined cam bar such that the inclination of the bar is reduced in a stepby-step manner. This lowering of the cam bar reduces the throw of the plate 87, carrying the traversing member 35, to form a package with tapered ends. Specifications 909, 154, 947, 414 and U.S.A. Specification 2, 607, 197 are referred to.
