Abstract

947,118. Temperature sensitive devices. WILMOT-BREEDEN Ltd. Sept. 24,1962 [Sept. 25, 1961],No. 34276/61. Heading G1D. [Also in Division F1] A rotary fan 14 has one or more blades 20 formed of two materials of different coefficients of thermal expansion e.g. a plastics material such as polypropylene, and steel, arranged so that the pitch or curvature of the blade or blades changes with temperature. In the embodiment shown the fan is moulded with three blades 20 and a hub 21 from polypropylene and steel strips 23 are heated and pressed into the blades 20, perforations 24 being provided in the strips 23 to anchor them in place. The strips are arranged to extend from the thicker leading edge 22 of the blades to the thinner trailing edge so that as temperature rises the pitch of the blades 20 increases, as shown in chain dotted lines in Fig. 3. The fan may be used as a cooling fan for the radiator of a water-cooled internal combustion engine, and arranged so that as the temperature rises the cooling effect produced by the fan will be increased. If desired the strips 23 may be arranged to decrease the pitch of the fan into increasing temperature.
