Abstract

1,105,865. Axial-flow fans. WALLACEMURRAY CORPORATION. May 10, 1966 [May 10, 1965], No.20605/66. Heading F1C. In a fan, particularly for cooling I. C. engines, the blades 14, Fig. 2, are flexible so that their pitch automatically reduces as the speed of the fan increases. Each blade is riveted at 21 together with a clamp member 17 and a backing plate 18, to an arm 12 extending radially from the hub 11. The backing plate reduces the stress concentration in the blades at the rivets. Moreover, the relative movement between blade and backing plate damps blade vibrations. The free radial edge of the backing plate may be bent away from the blade to limit the deflection of the blade and provide further support at maximum deflection, Fig. 3 (not shown). The arms 12 are asymmetrically spaced around the hub 11, Fig. 1 (not shown).
