Abstract

1,037,332. Axial-flow fans. KENLOWE ACCESSORIES & CO. Ltd. April 9, 1965 [Jan. 9, 1964], No. 1106/64. Heading F1C. In a fan for cooling I.C. engines, in which the blade pitch is varied in accordance with temperature, each blade comprises a movable portion 11 hinged to a rigid leading edge portion supported by the central boss 12. The hinge between the blade portions is formed by a V-shaped groove 26. The leading edge portions are secured in channel members 21 of the boss 12 by rectangular projections 24 engaging corresponding apertures in the members 21. The movable portions 11 are connected via pins 9 to a circular member bolted to a conventional drive pulley and water pump assembly. In the event of an increase in the engine cooling water temperature sensed by a wax-filled capsule immersed adjacent the water pump, the boss 12 is moved axially away from the circular member, against the action of a return spring (not shown), to thereby increase the blade pitch. In an alternative embodiment (not shown), the fan impeller is formed from a sheet of three layers of material riveted together, the central layer being of flexible material and in one piece, and each of the outer layers, at each blade, being divided by one or more channels to form the boundaries between the leading edge portion and movable portion and consequently the hinge between these portions. The central flexible layer may be of synthetic resin, such as polypropylene, or of sheet stainless steel or phosphor bronze, and the outer layers may be of cadmium plated steel.
