In a press with heated press plates, suitable for the manufacture of fibreboards, plywood panels &c., the movable lower press plate 2, and the upper fixed press plate 1, are formed by upper plates 6A, 6H and lower plates 5A, 5H, as in Fig. 1, joined by ribs 7 and surrounded by a heat insulation hood 10. Both the upper and lower plates of each press plate are heated by the circulation of a heating medium through passages 8 and 9 as is shown for the upper plate by the circuit diagram, Fig. 3. By adjusting the number of passages 8 and 9 both upper and lower plates may be kept at the same temperature or at a constant temperature difference. The lower press plate is reciprocated by rams 3 and 4, having coolable crowns 11, the plate resting upon abutments 12 when idle. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) both upper and lower plates of a press plate may be heated by separate heating circuits, each plate being maintained at a constant temperature by temperature regulating devices associated with each circuit. Convex and concave pressing plates may be formed by dividing the upper and lower plates of each press plate into a number of sections each of which is controlled to a different temperature or temperature difference.
