Abstract
In the manufacture of continuous-strip chipboard by pressing a mat of coated chips section by section, the hot-pressing zone is preceded and followed by a zone of less width in which the moisture expelled in the hot zone can condense. In the pre-heating zone I, the temperature of the press platens is built up rapidly to a point where slight curing of the binder takes place, the upper platen being heated more rapidly than the lower. In zone II, the platen temperatures are reversed and then cooling is effected to bring the temperatures into coincidence. In zone III, the temperature of both platens is increased slowly to curing temperature, at which it is held until curing is complete and is then allowed to cool slowly in zone V. Condensation of the expelled moisture takes place in zones III and V. The platens are heated by the circulation of steam or hot water through groups of channels the temperature of which can be separately controlled.
