Abstract

An electrically insulating oil has a total aromatic content of 11 to 14% by weight, of which the naphthalenic and 3-ring and higher aromatic fractions are respectively greater than 23% and less than 5% by weight of the total. In an example, 82 parts of a base oil having the required electrical properties and from which all the aromatic constituents have been removed are blended with 18 parts of an extract containing 42% of aromatics to produce an oil having the desired characteristics of good dielectric properties and zero gas evolution under high electrical stress.
