Abstract
946,401. Igniting gas fires. OATLEY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. April 19, 1961 [Jan. 29, 1960], No. 3217/60. Heading F4F. In a gas fire having a row of radiants 2 supported by a fire back 1 having side cheeks 3, a flash passage 15 extends through one of the side cheeks 3 and through an aligned opening 17 in the end radiant whereby the main burner jet 5 can be ignited from a continuously burning pilot 14. Further openings 17 provide flash communication between adjacent radiants. The flash passage is formed by a heatresisting steel tube, and a projection 18 on the tube or on the wall of the end radiant deflects gas into the flash passage. Alternatively, an auxiliary pilot may be provided. Gas is supplied to the fire through a pressure governor 7, a control tap 8 and a flame failure device 9 comprising a spring-loaded magnetic valve which is held open by a thermocouple 20 heated by the pilot 14 and is provided with a resetting button 21. The flame failure device may alternatively comprise a bi-metal strip directly operating a gas valve. A unitary radiant panel may replace the radiants 2. When neat gas jets are used for the main burner the fire may include one or more combustion chambers integral with or separate from the radiants or the radiant panel.
