A flash back ignition device for a gas burner, 23 comprises a substantially straight flash tube 42 of constant cross-section having a gas nipple 47 provided with two closely spaced orifices 48, 49 one of which directs a stream of gas along the flash tube to a permanent igniter, for instance a small gas jet or an electrically energized catalytic wire 5, and the other of which directs a flame through a side opening 46 in the flash tube towards the burner 23, the flows of gas to the nipple 47 and to the burner 23 being controlled by a single gas cock 13. Each of the four burners on the top plate of the gas oven shown has its own flash tube, double orifice nipple and igniter which are disposed on the outside of the vertical peripheral wall 37 of a well plate 36. The burners are disposed within the well plate and apertures 38 are provided in the wall 37 for the ignition flame from the double orifice nipples. The igniters may be mounted within the ends of the flash tube and instead of two igniters between the adjacent ends of two flash tubes (as shown) a single igniter may be provided. The electric igniters may be energized by a switch actuated by the gas cocks. The flash tube 44 associated with the oven burner 32 has a gas nipple having two orifices facing in opposite directions, one being directed along the flash tube to the igniter 50 and the other being directed out of the open end of the flash tube to impinge on a bimetal strip 35 which on heating opens a valve 34 to supply gas to the oven burner; the latter is then ignited by the flame heating the bimetal strip. A similar valve operated by a bimetal. strip may control the gas supply to each of the hot plate burners. The gas nipple in the flash tube may have three orifices, one directing gas to the igniter, another towards the bimetal strip and the third towards the burner. In a modification the four flash tubes for the hot plate burners and a flash tube for an oven burner terminate in a single control chamber disposed at the centre of the well plate 36 and containing a permanent pilot jet. Holes may be formed in the flash tubes near the control chamber. Baffles may be disposed in the flash tubes.
