Abstract

945,860. Resilient mountings. METALASTIK Ltd. April 2, 1962 [May 19, 1961], No. 18482/61. Heading F2S. A resilient mounting of the kind comprising a bush 10 of rubber or like elastomeric material which is adapted to be inserted into a rigid housing and comprising a rigid inner metal part 11 which is bonded to the rubber bush and which is adapted for attachment to a member which is to be resiliently supported from the housing by the bush is characterized in that the bush is cored, slotted, or otherwise provided with recessed portions to provide a plane of reduced thickness for the mounting and in that the rigid inner metal part is flattened in planes parallel with that plane. As shown, the rigid inner part comprises metal plates 12, 13 which have semi-circular channel portions forming a bore 15 for receiving an attachment pin, e.g. for a leaf-spring, and the ends of which penetrate mid-way into slots 14 in the bush and are provided with out-turned flanges which form buffering faces 16 to engage respectively the adjacent walls of the slots 14 and limit the lowstiffness range of deflection in the mid-horizontal plane. When the buffering faces 16 engage the portions 18 of the bush further deflection is resisted by the portions acting in compression. The stiffness of the mounting in a vertical direction is relatively high, the rubber acting mainly in compression. A sleeve 24, split at 20, is bonded to the bush 10, the split 20 extending through the bush and into the slots 14 so that when it is inserted in a smaller housing the rubber bush is pre-compressed in a direction between its long sides and the split 20 is preferably closed. The outer sleeve may be omitted, the bushing 10 being inserted directly into the housing. In a modification the plates 12, 13 may be replaced by a rectangular cross-sectioned bar having a central bore and side faces which form the buffering-faces 16 and the outer sleeve 24, formed in one piece and shrunk into and preferably bonded to the bush so that the latter is in compression, is dimensioned to be a pushfit in the housing, e.g. an eye of a spring. In a further modification the side buffering-faces of the bar are rounded and the outer sleeve 24 is of cylindrical shape and holds the bush radial in precompression. In both modifications the outer sleeve and the bush may be split as shown in Figs. 1, 2. Instead of the slots 14 the bush may have recessed portions in order to form slots between the outer sleeve 24 and the bush the inner metal part 11 being totally imbedded in the bush. The outer sleeve may be omitted; and the inner metal part may be completely embedded in the central part of the bush 40 so that buffering takes place between the interfacing walls of the slots 14.
