Abstract

The invention comprises 20,20-bis-hydroxy-methylene -3a - phosphato -5b - pregnan -11- one having the formula: <FORM:0945506/C2/1> (where AC represents either a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical derived either from an organic carboxylic acid having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms or from a mineral acid), their non-toxic water-soluble salts, 3a -diaralkylphosphato -20,20-bis-hydroxymethylene - 5b - pregnan -11- ones and the ketonides thereof and processes for the preparation of the aforesaid compounds in which a lower ketonide of 3a -hydroxy -20,20-bis-hydroxymethylene -5b - pregnan -11- one is reacted with an aralkyl halogenophosphonate to form the corresponding ketonide of 3a -diaralkylphosphato -20,20-bis-hydroxymethylene -5b -pregnan -11- one, the protected 20,20-bis-hydroxymethylene groups of which are then liberated by acid hydrolysis to form the corresponding 3a -diaralkylphosphato -20,20-bis-hydroxymethylene -5b - pregnan -11- one, and the latter is subjected to hydro genolysis to yield 20,20-bis-hydroxymethylene -3a - phosphato -5b -pregnan -11- one. As aralkyl halogenophosphonate there may be used dibenzyl chlorophosphonate while hydrogenolysis may be effected by hydrogenation in the presence of palladium black.
