Abstract
945,445. Positive clutches. AUSTIN MOTOR CO. Ltd. Nov. 5, 1962 [Nov. 29, 1961], No. 42609/61. Heading F2C. In a friction synchronized positive clutch for a change-speed gear, the working surface of a synchronizing cone 2 is coated at 3 with molybdenum or an alloy or composition of high molybdenum content and the balk ring 4 is made of high tensile steel, sintered steel or sintered steel alloy with sufficient carbon content to permit the balking cams 6 to be hardened by high-frequency induction heating followed by rapid quenching. The cams 6 are hardened to a depth of from 0.006 to 0.01 of an inch. After hardening the coned bore of the balk ring 4 is threaded and formed with oil grooves 8. The coating 3 of the synchronizing cone 2 is applied by spraying or electro-deposition and has a thickness of 0.010 to 0.014 of an inch.
