Abstract
945,362. Air guns. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. May 17, 1960 [May 19, 1959], No. 16879/59. Heading F3C. Relates to air guns of the drop-down type in which the barrel is pivoted in a fork at the front end of the air cylinder. According to the invention the cylinder is formed from a suitably shaped sheet metal blank and includes integral parts forming the wall of the cylinder and the arms of the barrel pivoting fork. In one form a blank of steel sheet has parts 1, Fig. 1, to form the arms of the fork, a central region 2 to form the main body of the cylinder, a rear portion 3 to form the housing for the spring and associated parts of the gun action, front and rear extension 4, 5 for mounting the cylinder to a stock and lateral extensions 6 forming a mounting bracket for the trigger and other parts of the gun action. The blank is bent into the tubular shape shown in Figs. 3, 7, the parts 1 being formed into arcuate sections and the extensions 4 extending below in side-by-side relation. The portion 7 between the parts 1 is retained during the initial pressing operations but is then cut away and the edges of the parts 1 turned inwardly as shown in Fig. 7. The meeting edges 9 of the central region are brazed or welded together and the overlapping rear extensions 5 likewise joined. A circular plug 10 with an air passage 11 is then seated against the inturned edges of the parts 1. A reinforcing plate 12 is inserted within the inturned edges of each of the parts 1 to abut against the plug 10 and extensions of the plates 12 lie close beside the extensions 4. The plates and plug are then brazed or welded in position. The edges of the rear portion 3 are spaced apart to form a slot along which the cocking lever can slide. Holes 14, 15 are drilled in the fork arms for receiving the barrel pivot pin and a stop pin. Portions 8 are upset and V-shaped slots milled at the side edges to form sight-mounting projection of dovetail section. In another embodiment, Figs. 9-13 (not shown), the cylinder is formed from a blank to provide a substantially square cross-section, and the plug for closing the front end of the cylinder is formed integrally with plates for reinforcing the fork arms.
