Abstract

Organo lead compounds of formula PbR4 where R is alkyl or aryl obtained by reacting lead, an alkylating or arylating agent and an alkali or alkaline earth metal are extracted with one or more solvents liquid at 20 DEG C. and normal atmospheric pressure, the extraction taking place at a temperature below 20 DEG C. preferably between +10 DEG C. and -40 DEG C. under normal atmospheric pressure. Solvents specified include benzene, ethyl benzene, dichloroethane, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethane, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, chlorobenzene and heptane. Solvents which may be solid at the extraction temperature selected may be mixed with another solvent to lower the freezing point. The extraction may be batchwise or continuous. With batchwise operation three or more successive extractions may be necessary. The extract may be separated from the solids by conventional means such as decantation, filtration or centrifuging.
