In a mineral-mining installation a controller 24 for a variable delivery pump 27 driving a hydraulic motor 19 of haulage means 17 for reciprocating a drum or disc cutter type mining machine 1 along a face is responsive to the pressure developed by a constant delivery pump 26 driving an hydraulic motor 10 of an endless rope system 8 extending along the length of a face 3, 6 and having one run passing about to drive a shaft 4 carrying the cutter drum or cutter disc(s) 5 of the machine 1. The controller 24 regulates the rate of advance of the machine according to the resistance encountered by the cutter drum or discs. Mounted in the machine is a water tank 37 and a pump 27 driving connected to the shaft 4 to pump water to one or more spray nozzles directed at the drum or disc(s) 5 and the surrounding face.
