Abstract

A method of coating articles comprises flame spraying a refractory oxide on to the surface of an article to form a porous oxide coating thereon and then applying a coating of polytetrafluoroethylene or tetrafluoroethylene/hexafluoropropylene copolymer to the oxide coating. The refractory oxide, which is supplied as a powder to the spray gun, may be aluminium oxide, a mixture of nickel and chromium oxides, nickel oxide and molybdenum oxide. The articles specified are moulding tools and frying pans. In the example the article is baked to remove oils and solvents, vapour degreased be exposure to trichloroethylene, grit blasted, heated, flame-sprayed with a mixture of nickel and chromium oxides and then with aluminium oxide, cooled, sprayed with the polyfluorocarbon in a solvent carrier, and heated.
