Abstract

The invention comprises water-insoluble dyes of the formula <FORM:0944722/C3/1> where W is hydrogen or halogen, X is alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, Y is hydrogen, halogen or an alkyl sulphonyl, carbalkoxy or carbo(substituted alkoxy) radical and n is 1 or 2. The dyes are made by cyclizing a compound of the formula <FORM:0944722/C3/2> by treatment with a dehydrating or condensing agent, or by reacting a hydroxy compound of the formula XOH with a compound of the formula <FORM:0944722/C3/3> where Z is halogen. The dyes wherein X is chloro-alkyl may be obtained by treating the corresponding hydroxyalkyl compound with thionyl chloride. The dyes wherein X is aryloxyalkyl or aminoalkyl may be made by reacting the dyes where X is halogenoalkyl with phenols or amines. Examples are given. The dyes dye cellulose esters and polyesters from aqueous dispersion in green and blue shades. 1 - Amino - 2 - b - ethoxyethoxy - 4 - (2 - carboxy-anilino)-anthraquinone is made by heating b -ethoxy-ethanol with 1-amino-2-sulpho-4-(21-carboxy-anilino) anthraquinone.
