Abstract

In a process for the preparation of copolymers by copolymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer with an unsaturated polyester, the latter is obtained by condensing a tri- or higher polyhydric alcohol with an aldehyde in the presence of an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or an anhydride thereof to form an acetal containing two or more hydroxyl groups per molecule and esterifying this acetal with the unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride. The condensation reaction may take place prior to or simultaneously with the esterification. Small amounts of monohydric acetate may be present in the mixture undergoing esterification. Specified polyester components are:-acids-maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic or mesaconic acids, possibly in admixture with succinic, adipic, azelaic, sebacic and the phthalic acids; alcohols-glycerol, trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane and pentaerythritol; aldehydes-form-, acet-, butyr-, croton-, furfur-, cinnam-, benz- or tolyl-aldehyde or ethyl hexanol. Specified monomers are styrene, vinyl toluene, acrylonitrile, ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, allyl acrylate or methacrylate, and diallyl maleate, sebacate, azelate or phthalate. In examples, unsaturated polyesters derived from (a) maleic anhydride (b) phthalic anhydride (c) trimethylol propane and pentaerythritol and (d) formaldehyde, benzaldehyde or butyraldehyde are copolymerized with styrene to provide coatings free from surface tackiness.
