944,178. Centrifugal pumps. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Nov. 3, 1960 [Nov. 5, 1959], No. 37817/60. Headings F1C and F1E. Pumping apparatus comprises a main pump 1 with a jet pump 4 in the suction line 3, a feed-back line 5 connecting delivery line 2 to the high pressure supply pipe of jet pump 4 and a valve 6 controlled by a pressure controller 7 whereby the main pump suction line pressure is controlled by feeding back liquid to the high pressure inlet of the jet pump in dependence on the main pump suction line pressure. Liquid, e.g. liquified natural gas, butane, butadiene, propane or methane, from reservoir 8 passes through suction line 3 jet pump 4 and main pump 1 to delivery line 2. The main pump load is maintained constant by a control valve 11 operated by a controller 10 in dependence on the pressure in delivery line 2. In another embodiment, a pipe 17 connects controller 7 to the vapour space in reservoir 8. In a further embodiment the jet pump and part of the suction line are contained within reservoir 8 and the main pump suction line is led through the roof of the reservoir.
