Abstract

944,112. Cathode-ray storage tubes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO. Ltd. Sept. 7, 1961 [Jan. 13, 1961], No. 1522/61. Heading H1D. In a direct-viewing storage tube, different successively recurrent potentials P.S. are applied between the storage grid backing SM and the flood gun cathode FC, so that input signals SS above a predetermined strength, applied to modulate the writing beam, result in stored charges which permit flood beam electrons to pass through the storage grid at full strength, whereas input signals below said predetermined strength result in stored charges which substantially cut off the flood beam electrons. Preferably the recurrent potentials comprise two timespaced rectangular pulses occurring for equal time periods, the larger one alone producing a secondary emission ratio, in relation to flood beam electrons, which is as much above unity as the corresponding secondary emission ratio produced by the smaller one alone is below unity. Alternatively, the pulses need not be of equal duration, provided that their amplitudes are such that, in the absence of a " writing " signal, the amount of positive charge acquired by the storage insulator during the larger pulse equals that lost during the shorter pulse. Also, the pulses need not be time-spaced. Stored signals can be erased by omitting the larger amplitude pulses.
