Abstract

1,085,811. Cathode-ray storage tubes. TEKTRONIX Inc. Jan. 12, 1965 [Jan. 13, 1964], No. 1412/65. Heading H1D. In a bi-stable storage tube, particularly of the direct-view type described in Specification 992,178, in which the target 26 is bombarded with low velocity holding electrons from source 30 to permit the bi-stable storage of a charge image produced on the target by a high velocity writing beam, the writing rate of the tube is increased by preventing the holding electrons from bombarding the target during writing, and by momentarily increasing the velocity of the holding electrons after writing by means of an enhancement voltage greater than the first cross-over voltage, so that written areas of the target having a potential less than the first crossover voltage are charged to a potential above this voltage, after which the velocity of the holding electrons is decreased to permit conventional bi-stable storage. The momentary increase in the velocity of the holding electrons is possible since unwritten background areas of the target charge at a slower rate than the written areas and are not permitted to reach the first crossover voltage. The flood gun cathodes 31 may be connected to a three-position manual switch to effect cut-off during writing; application of a writing rate enhancement pulse whereby the cathode potential rises exponentially from - 70V to 0V in a time determined by the circuit including capacitor 48 and resistors 50, 52, and then remains at OV for directviewing storage; and erasure. Alternatively, for automatic operation, a blanking signal generator is triggered by the input writing signal to apply a negative voltage blanking pulse to the control grids of the flood guns, so that a capacitor connected to the flood gun cathodes charges to a negative voltage to increase momentarily the velocity of the flood electrons when the flood guns are turned back on by termination of the blanking pulse. As a further alternative, a negative rectangular pulse may be applied to the flood gun cathodes for writing rate enhancement.
