Abstract
943,475. Stuffing-box substitutes; hydraulic dampers. A. R. B. NASH. Dec. 2, 1960 [Dec. 2, 1959], No. 40864/59. Headings F2B and F2S. A damper, comprising a piston 4 and attached piston-rod 6 axially slidable in a cylinder 2 filled with damping fluid, is provided with a flexible diaphragm seal 14 between the pistonrod and that end of the cylinder through which the rod projects and with radial guide means for the piston-rod. The diaphragm 14 is made of an elastomer such as rubber and has a frustoconical shape. The guide means comprise a cylindrical cover 8 engaging the outer surface of the cylinder 2 and fixed to the end of the piston-rod. To avoid stretching or bursting of the diaphragm 14 due to undue pressure rise, the piston is provided with orifices 34 controlled by a non-return valve 32, whereby fluid may flow towards the end wall 3 of the cylinder. An elastomeric membrane 22 attached in fluidtight manner to the piston and piston-rod forms a recuperating chamber 20 which communicates to the atmosphere through holes 28 in the piston-rod. A cylindrical shroud 30, e.g. of wire gauze, prevents outward distortion of the membrane 22.
