Apparatus for forming articles of metal strip comprises dies to bend the strip transversely as it is drawn through them, a rotatable non- circular bender member capable by its driven rotation of tensioning the strip and drawing it through the dies while the strip is bent longitudinally by being wrapped about the periphery of the bender member, and an arrangement to prevent excessive tensioning of the strip by allowing an increase of tension to reduce the rotational speed of the member. Metal strip 1 from a coil 2 is drawn between rollers 11, 11<SP>1</SP> which co-operate to give it a channel section, by a former 9, to which the strip is clamped, rotated through a slip clutch 18. The channel sectioned strip 4 is thus wrapped around the former 9. The strip 4 is clamped to the former 9 by a toggle-actuated clamp 20 or 21 closed by engagement with a fixed cam 22 and opened by engagement with a fixed cam 23. Shearing elements 24, 25 carried by the former 9 adjacent the clamps 20, 21, respectively, are actuated by a fixed cam 26 to shear a bent strip from the supply. The severed bent strip 8 falls, or may be ejected, into a bin 15.
