Abstract
<PICT:0943236/C1/1> In the drawing of glass tubing or rod 7 from a sleeve of softened glass formed on an inclined rotating mandrel 1, the sleeve of glass is tooled, as by a roller 8, with a light resilient pressure against the glass, in the lower half of its length during rotation of the mandrel so as to render the sleeve wall thickness more uniform. The ceramic mandrel 1 has a tip 2 of corrosion-resistant metal and is secured to a hollow shaft for rotation therewith, the shaft acting as a blow-pipe when tubing is being produced, the whole being enclosed in a muffle 12 suitably heated as by gas burners and having a sliding door 13 and a steel door 14 with lining 15 of refractory material, the rod or tube 7 passing through an opening 16. The atmosphere in the muffle is of nitrogen to prevent oxidation of the graphite of the roller 8. As shown, the roller 8 is carried in a gimbal 17 in a yoke 18 on the end of a long tube 19 pivoted at 20 near its mid point and guided at 21 to prevent lateral displacement. A slidable counterweight 22 gives light pressure of the roller 8 on the glass. In an alternative construction, the roller 8 is mounted in a yoke at the end of a water-cooled arm with counterweight.
