Abstract

[Also in Division H2] In a D.C. to D.C. converter incorporating one or more transistors in an oscillator whose output is fed through a transformer to a rectifying arrangement (e.g. a voltage doubler) including a load capacitor C1 which is charged to a high voltage, a coupling capacitor C2 is connected between the transformer and rectifying arrangement and has a sufficiently high impedance for the transistors not to be cut off but to maintain oscillation at a high level even though the load capacitor presents a very low impedance when the oscillator is switched on. With a load capacitor of 500 ÁF as used in an electronic flash unit, and a coupling capacitor of 0.1 to 0.5 ÁF instead of the conventional value of 10 ÁF the load capacitor may reach 80% full charge in 5 seconds instead of 18 (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). The secondary winding turns may be increased by about 20%, to compensate for the reduction in load voltage due to the coupling capacitor. Specification 943,044 is referred to.
