Abstract

Graft and block polymers are made by polymerizing unsaturated monomers and polymers containing alcoholic hydroxyl groups in the presence of periodic acid or a salt thereof as an activator. Polymers specified are cellulose, etherified cellulose, polymers of beta-hydroxyethyl acrylate and methacrylate, polymers of glycerin and glycol acrylates and methacrylates, ethoxylated polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene oxide containing terminal hydroxyl groups, polypropylene glycol, saponified polymers of vinylidene carbonate, and a copolymer of vinylchloride, vinyl acetate and monoethyleneglycol maleate. The use of polyglycols gives rise to block polymers. Monomers specified are styrene, acrylic and methacrylic acids and their amides, esters and nitriles, vinyl esters, vinyl halides, vinyl pyrrolidones, vinyl pyridines, vinyl carbazoles, butadiene, isoprene, and mixtures thereof with one another or with maleic or fumaric acid. The polymerization may be carried out in water,-aqueous methanol or pure organic solvents. The examples describe the grafting on to cotton cloth of acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, N-tert.-butyl acrylamide, methyl methacrylate and a mixture of methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, the grafting of acrylonitrile on to a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/monoethyleneglycol maleate copolymer, and the formation of a block copolymer of acrylonitrile and a polyethylene glycol containing terminal hydroxyl groups.
