Abstract

942,928. Pneumatic conveyers. UNILEVER Ltd. Dec. 21, 1960 [Dec. 22, 1959], No. 43445/59. Heading B8A. Powdered material may be fed into a hopper 1 through a flexible connection 6, a weigh beam 3 and scale 4 indicating when a desired charge is present. The base of the hopper is constituted by a porous membrane 9 (Fig. 2) which carries a valve member 17 adapted to co-operate with a seat 20 in an outlet pipe 21. The valve element 17 can be lifted from the position shown, into engagement with the seat 20, by the action of an hydraulic cylinder 27 and linkage 26, 22. A lower part 16 of the element 17 co-operates with a slide 29 formed with tapered grooves 31. The position of the grooves 31 in relation to the valve part 16 may be adjusted by rotation of the squared lower end of the slide 29 in a threaded member 33. Pressure air is supplied at 14 to a chamber 12 disposed below the membrane 9. In operation, when material is being fed through the connection 6 to the hopper 1, the valve element 17 is in closing engagement with the seat 20 in the outlet pipe 21, and a valve 15 controlling air supply to the inlet 14 is closed. When the desired charge of material is indicated by the scale 4, the valve 15 is opened and air passes through the grooves 31 to the outlet pipe 21. The valve element 17 is then lowered by the action of the cylinder 27 and the powdered material which is now fluidized by air passing through the membrane 9, passes out through the seat 20 into the outlet pipe 21. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the valve element 17 is replaced by a member 37 connected by a membrane 40 (which is not porous) to the base 41 of a chamber 46. The latter is supplied with pressure air through a conduit 48 and is disposed below a porous nylon membrane (not shown) supported on rods 45. The valve 37 is actuated by an hydraulic cylinder 49 acting through links 50 and it slides on a member 51 which has axial grooves 52 corresponding to the grooves 31 of Fig. 2. Compressed air is supplied at 53 to the space below the membrane 40.
