Abstract
Triethylenediamine of structure: <FORM:0942868/C2/1> is prepared by passing a gaseous mixture of ammonia and one or more of mono-, di- and triethanolamine, in the ratio of ammonia to amine of 3-12:1, at a space velocity of 0.1-2 volumes of amine (measured as liquid) per volume of catalyst per hour, at a pressure of 0.5-2 atmospheres, into contact with inorganic acidic cracking catalyst particles maintained at 288 DEG -400 DEG C., withdrawing effluent vapours, and recovering triethylenediamine therefrom, e.g. by separating normally gaseous components and recycling ammonia contained therein, and fractionally distilling the residue. Examples use silica-alumina catalysts such as kaolin.
