Abstract

Piperazine and triethylene diamine are synthesised by contacting an alkylene polyamine-containing charge stock, in which the alkylene polyamines have the amino groups separated by two carbon atoms, in the vapour phase with an active solid siliceous cracking catalyst at 290 DEG -500 DEG C., and a pressure up to 10 atmospheres and at a space rate within the range 0.5-5.0 liquid volume of charge to one volume of catalyst; separating from the reaction product at least one fraction boiling in the range 130-160 DEG C. and containing significant amounts of piperazine, and at least one additional fraction boiling in the range 160-190 DEG C. and containing significant amounts of triethylene diamine; and separately, recovering the piperazine and the triethylene diamine from these fractions. Suitable starting materials are, for example, diethylene triamine, ethylene diamine, triethylene tetraamine and N-2-hydroxyethylethylene diamine. The preferred catalyst is silica-alumina which may contain zirconium or magnesium oxide. Subbentonite clays of the monmorillonite family and certain activated kaolin clays are also suitable.
