Vehicles are moved between packing spaces 3, Fig. 1, and a lift 2 in a multi-storey car park by a carriage 6 which is mounted on the lift and can be moved to either side to a position beneath a vehicle so that when telescopic arms 11, Fig. 6, are extended the vehicle wheels are engaged and lifted by members 7. The carriage 6 has rollers which run in grooves 12. The outer spaces in the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, may be used for long-term parking. A doubledecker lift may be provided to speed operations and facilitate clearing a space 9, Fig. 3, when a vehicle is to be retrieved from an outer space. Fig. 5 shows an embodiment having several lifts 1, 10. So that vehicles may be lifted with the brake on, or when chocked, rollers 13, Fig. 7, are provided on the members 7. Fig. 9 shows an embodiment in which access lanes 22 are provided on each side of a double-decker lift having two carriages 6 on each deck. The short sides of the lift shaft are closed by walls 17 and the lift is one-quarter shorter than the length of the well. As shown, two vehicles may be loaded in tandem from either side, but provision could be made to increase this number and several units as shown may be arranged side-by-side. Incoming vehicles stop at a position indicated in known manner with their wheels on movable portions 21 of the floor which comprise either endless belts or spring- loaded sliding plates. These sliding portions of the floor enable the vehicle to be centred by the lifting members when one or both sets of wheels are braked.
