A hot continuous casting is continuously coated with an air-excluding coating as it is withdrawn from the mould, to prevent or reduce scaling. The coating may act as a carrier for a chemically active substance capable of affecting at least a surface layer of the casting e.g. carbon to carburize the surface layer. The coating substance may be a metal or metal alloy, e.g. Al or Al alloy, powdered glass, powdered enamel with or without cobalt oxide or titanium oxide or both, clay or a mixture of clay, feldspar, fluorspar, borax, soda, quartz and cobalt oxide, with or without titanium dioxide. Additives such as silicon, calcium or mixtures thereof to assist adhesion may be included.
