Abstract

942,114. Joint-making packing. VOLVO A.B. June 15, 1962 [June 21, 1961], No. 23230/62. Heading F2B. Sealing means for the cooling water or lubricating oil ducts 4 between the cylinder block 1 and head 2 of an internal combustion engine comprises a rubber &c. ring 6 having its inner periphery covered with a metal lining which extends over at least a part of one end face of the ring, clearance 7 being provided around the ring to permit radial expansion thereof in use. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the ring 6 is located and retained in a hole 5 in the metal cylinder head gasket 3 by integral tongues 9 on the ring being stuck or otherwise secured to the wall of the hole. The lining 8 extends around both end faces of the ring 6 which, in its free state, is thicker than the gasket. In a modification, Fig. 4, the ring 6 is located by an axial projection 10 of the lining engaging the bore of the duct 4. In another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the gasket 3 is omitted and the ring is inserted with clearance in a recess in the cylinder block 1.
