Abstract

942,075. Photographing relief printing formes and producing duplicate relief or lithographic printing surfaces. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Dec. 9, 1960 [Jan. 27, 1960], No. 42520/60. Headings G2C and G2M. A photographic negative is produced from a relief printing forme by providing the relief surface with a layer of a dry pigment, contacting the pigment-bearing surface with a high contrast silver halide emulsion film which carries on at least the contacting side a layer of a soluble polymeric material which is soft or tacky under the conditions of contact so that the pigment is deposited on it from the relief areas, exposing the film to light through the pigment-bearing face, and developing and fixing the film and removing the pigment and polymeric layer with a solvent at any time after exposure of the film. The softenable layer may be non-tacky at room temperature and softened by heating, moistening, or chemical treatment. Examples are hard polyethylene oxides having a molecular weight above 50000; soft polyethylene glycols of molecular weight 1 000 to 24 000; polyalkylene glycol ethers; polyvinyl pyrollidones; polyvinyl acetates; polyvinylpyridines; mixed polyesters; polyvinyl acetals; cellulose ethers; polyacrylamide; polyvinyl alcohol; casein; agar agar; dextran; rubber cement; and glues. Surface active agents may be included if desired to improve adhesion and non-contacting cover sheets may be provided to prevent contamination by dust. Suitable pigments are carbon black, magnesium oxide, black or red iron oxide, manganese dioxide, aluminium or copper powders, and phthalocyanine or azo dyes. The emulsion may be overcoated with an antiabrasion layer which may contain matting agents such as silica, starch or magnesium silicates but preferably the film has no antihalation layer, a light-absorptive material being placed against the back of the film during exposure. The process may be applied to the production of printing plates or cylinders, the resulting negative being used to expose a photopolymerisable printing plate as in Specifications 741,294 and 741, 441 or to produce a lithographic printing surface. Specifications 757,285, 765,893, 786,344, 786,345 and 864,041 also are referred to.
